Full job description at https://hoganprep.tedk12.com/hire/index.aspx Job Title: School Counselor Reports To: Principal FLSA Status: Exempt Contract Days: Ten Months (Academic School Year) + 15 days ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Individual Counseling: Counsel students individually for developmental, communication skills, problem solving skills, and decision making skills Conduct initial counseling with crisis issues. Makes referrals to the school’s crisis counselor or community resources as necessary Assist parents and administration with referrals and exchange of information about community resources as required Consult with students, teachers, parents, and administration regarding student behavior, academic progress, attendance, and tardiness in order to assist students in resolving issues and modifying behavior Act as a mediator to bring together individuals in need of problem resolution to include student/student, student/teacher, teacher/parent, etc Participate with the multi-disciplinary team regarding special needs students to include staffing, consulting, testing, and making recommendations for appropriate accommodations Enroll and assist new students in getting acclimated to the school’s procedures, learning opportunities, and extracurricular activities College and Career Counseling: Provide information to students and parents about a wide range of career and post-secondary educational opportunities Assist students in registering and preparing for college entrance examinations including PSAT, ACT and SAT tests Assist students with the college search and application process Assist students with the college scholarship and financial aid application process Co-teach the Senior Seminar class Academic Scheduling and Course Advisement: Assist the administration with the formation of the master schedule and the development of the school curriculum Track student progress toward graduation by developing and implementing a four year educational plan and credit check Assist students and parents annually in course selection and enrollment for the next school year. Make appropriate course changes as necessary during the academic year Provide information to parents and students regarding educational resources such as tutors, summer school, correspondence courses, study skills materials, etc Coordinate and oversees the school’s academic probation program by: Evaluating student progress each quarter Scheduling meetings with students and parents to place students who are not successful into an academic monitoring and probation status Writing an academic contract (to be signed by teachers, student, and parent) in an effort to help them improve their academic performance Monitoring progress on a weekly basis of students placed on probation to check on compliance with their academic contract. Provides information to parents and administration about the student’s progress Advise students that have not made sufficient progress toward graduation regarding their enrollment status for the following school year, to include the possible necessity for summer school and/or night school to make up lost credits. Other duties as assigned NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Other duties as assigned REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must have: The minimum of a Master’s Degree in Counseling from an accredited college or university A valid Missouri Teacher's Certificate (applicable level-area endorsements preferred) A completed credential file that meets Hogan Preparatory Academy standards Five years teaching experience Three years experience as a School Counselor Good people skills Ability to pass extensive background check Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong PC skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel Self-starter with ability to handle multiple tasks and frequent interruptions Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding staff and students KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, and teachers Working knowledge of college and community resources Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions Ability to work independently Ability to follow internal procedures to ensure internal controls are properly maintained
