Community Based Teacher Job Description CLASSIFICATION: Any Special Education Teacher Certification QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in functional and daily life skill instruction Ability to teach work related and advocacy skills in the classroom and work environment Knowledge of how to accommodate students in different work based settings Knowledge of transition resources in the community and their role in the IEP Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with students, families, school and work based personnel Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board and/or Superintendent may find appropriate REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services and High School Principals PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: Provide in class and on the job instruction to support students in career exploration and obtainment of competitive employment Teach functional life and daily living skills to high school students preparing for transition out of high school Teach competitive, transferable and marketable job skills to support students in employment Teach advocacy and independence in a work based setting Coordinate and oversee work based experiences to include scheduling of sites, students and transportation needs Provide accommodations to the work site and/or responsibilities to meet the individual needs of the students Partner with outside agencies to ensure resources and services are available for continued support of students post high school REQUIRED PERFORMANCE AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Assesses work readiness, career interests and preferences, and ability to demonstrate success in a work based program Instructs students in employability skills, which includes appropriate work related attitudes, habits, behavior, dress and communication skills necessary to obtain and maintain competitive employment Instructs students in advocacy, functional, and daily life skills to increase independence and job skills Assesses job sites and responsibilities and makes appropriate accommodations to ensure accessibility for individual students Assists students with job application and skill development in preparation for each work based site Partners with outside agencies, community resources and services and provides them to students and families as needed Meets with students, families, and school as an instructor and member of the IEP team to address progress toward transition goals and to address any issues impacting the student’s educational success Schedules students and job sites with community partners Functions as an on-site job coach for 2-3 students throughout the duration of the students’ work day Provides feedback at the end of each work shift Communicates regularly and effectively with work based personnel, transition agencies/supports, and other appropriate agencies on student progress Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance Attends all meetings as requested by building and district administration Maintains strict confidentiality of student data and work site information Fulfills any and all other requests made by building and district administration TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 20-30 hour work week; salary based on prorated teacher salary schedule EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel. PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND VISUAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. The employee will be escorting students to job sites via district transportation (riding on a bus or van). Additionally, the employee may occasionally be required to push or lift up to 50 lbs as necessary for the safety and well-being of others. This job requires the employee to have the vision ability to read handwritten or typed materials, hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously and meet multiple demands from several people while interacting with other staff, community partners and the public.
