Description:  The Special Education Paraprofessional, as a member of the special education team, works under the supervision of the certified Inclusion Specialist. This person primarily works in self-contained settings, assisting the Inclusion Specialist in implementing special education and related services for students identified with emotional disturbances. Such assistance may include: providing instructional assistance, guiding additional practice opportunities, reteaching, and monitoring behavior. The Special Education Paraprofessional will: „Meet Paraprofessional requirements as established by state and local mandates; „Establish and maintain working relations with colleagues; „Participate in planning sessions with the Intervention Specialist and classroom teachers; „Demonstrate creativity, flexibility, and perseverance in dealing with challenging learning, behavioral, family, and classroom situations; „Demonstrate an ability to learn new and specialized approaches for atypical learners; „Provide support and supervision of students as assigned (during transitions, in special classes, during lunch, on the playground, etc.); „Assist students with unique physical, motor or sensory needs, as assigned; „Assist in the administration and scoring of assessments to track individual progress of students with disabilities by utilizing Curriculum Based Measurement, Edison Benchmarks, and other means of monitoring individual progress; „Adhere to services provided related to IEP objectives; „Assist with paperwork and clerical duties associated with special education services. Requirements: ƒMeets NCLB requirements: „Completed two years of full-time study at an institution of higher education (60 credit hours); „Meets rigorous standards of quality and demonstrate through a formal assessment the knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, reading, writing or mathematics. He or she also must possess a high school diploma. ƒMeets appropriate age, diploma and certification requirements as defined by the state; ƒBe capable of physically assisting students with specials needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, restraining, etc.); ƒDemonstrates the ability to work effectively under the direction of others; ƒDemonstrates the ability to work cooperatively with others; ƒDemonstrates a willingness to assume all responsibilities assigned which are appropriate for the position.
