Description:  GUIDANCE COUNSELOR QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Missouri Certification Degree required to meet requirements for Guidance Counselor. Job experience required to meet certification requirements for Guidance Counselor. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: Persons designated by the Board or the superintendent. JOB GOAL: To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Aids students in course and subject selection. Obtains and disseminates occupational information to students and to classes studying occupations. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation. Works to discover and develop special abilities of students. Works to address/resolve students’ educational handicaps. Registers students new to the school and orients them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning. Works to prevent students from dropping out of school. Helps students evaluate career interests and choices. Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, maturity, and understanding of self and others. Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment. Coordinates guidance field trips to schools, colleges, and industry for interested students. Guides students in their participation in school and community activities. Maintains student records and protects their confidentiality. Supervises the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications. Makes recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships. Provides student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board’s policy on student records. Confers with parents whenever necessary. Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered through the district’s K-12 guidance program, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled. Provides input to administrators and faculty on matters dealing with overall student performance. Takes an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large. Organizes and facilitates implementation of school to career programs. Assists in arrangements for tutors and summer school work. Demonstrates effective human relations and communication skills. Complies with good safety practices. Complies with all district rules, regulations, and policies. Other duties/responsibilities deemed necessary may be assigned. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The individual who holds this position is regularly required to walk, hear and speak and must have close moderate and distance vision ability. This individual must be able to travel between district facilities. The position requires a moderate amount of travel and physical activity. CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is consistent with typical office/school environment. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine and one half month year for guidance counselors with additional days for secondary guidance counselors. Salary and work calendar to be established by the Board of Education. Benefits according to Board Policies. F.L.S.A.: Exempt RETIREMENT: Public Education Employee Retirement Systems (PEERS) & Social Security or Certified Teacher (PSRS) & Social Security CLEARANCES: Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluations of Professional Personnel.
