Description:  Position: Library Media Specialist Term: 9 Months/Full-time Classification: Certified/Exempt Location: Joplin High School Qualifications: Valid MO Teaching Certificate, required Bachelor’s Degree, required Supervisory: No Reports to: Principal Qualifications: Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate Technology, Literacy Endorsement, ELA, or Advanced Degree (preferred) Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. General Expectations: Supports the mission of Joplin Schools. Supports the value of education. Become familiar with, enforce, and follow all applicable Board policies and regulations, administrative procedures, other directions given by district administrators and supervisors, and state and federal laws. Properly supervise students at all times, if applicable to essential job functions. Obey all safety rules, including rules protecting the safety and welfare of students. Care for, properly use, and protect school property. Maintain courteous and professional relationships with students, parents/guardians, other district employees and the public. Communicate effectively with supervisors, department staff, all members of the school district, and community as required. Provides excellence in customer service both internally and externally. Complies with privacy rights and safeguards confidential and/or sensitive information pertaining to staff and students. Reacts to change productively and receive and transmit constructive criticism as it relates to job duties. Actively participate in professional development and obtain skills and information necessary to effectively perform job duties. Conduct all official business in a professional and timely manner, utilizing district technology resources. Arrive to work and leave work at the time specified by supervisors and attend all required meetings pertinent to the position. Maintains accurate records and filing systems for accountability and audit purposes as required by law and Board policy. Solve practical problems utilizing math functions as needed to complete job duties. Read and interpret documents such as work orders, safety rules, and handbooks and apply to job duties. Essential Functions: Job Goals: Effectively promotes literacy and research skills to enhance student’s critical thinking and problem-solving Effectively plans and implements project-based learning experiences that are developmentally-appropriate for diverse learners Provides a commitment to STEM education, and an overall passion for problem-based learning with real-world application Performance Responsibilities: Teaching for Learning Applies knowledge of the academic, personal, social and cultural characteristics of students and relates them to learning through effective instructional strategies and assessments Collaborates effectively with classroom teachers and other educators Prepares and delivers rigorous, engaging, and project-based instruction to students Reading, Research, and Literacy: Promotes and encourages reading for enjoyment, personal growth and learning Selects appropriate fiction and nonfiction reading materials in multiple formats to facilitate maximum access for all members of the school community Routinely models a variety of research-based literacy strategies and problem-solving skills during instruction Information and Knowledge: Provides access to information for students, teachers, staff, and administrators to satisfy identified learning needs Teaches information literacy skills to build proficiency for student-driven research and individual creation of knowledge through critical thinking Promotes equitable access to resources in a variety of formats and services for a variety of needs Program Management and Administration: Administers a school literacy integration plan using appropriate and relevant data to support student achievement Selects, acquires, catalogs, retrieves, integrates, circulates, preserves, and deselects information sources appropriately Manages fiscal, physical, and personnel resources effectively Develops policies and procedures to support all aspects of the Literacy and PLTW programs Professional Development: Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Attendance: Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position. Physical Demands: Regularly required to walk, talk, and hear. Frequently is required to stand or sit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Ability to lift 25 pounds
